Description

Buckingham Palace is over 300 years old and has hundreds of rooms. Most of them are out of bounds as they are used as the headquarters of the monarchy but some of the State Rooms are occasionally open to the public over the Summer months.

It’s well-worth a look from the outside regardless and is about a ten minute walk from Victoria, St James’s Park, Hyde Park Corner and Green Park tube stations, although a slightly longer walk from Westminster is also a good way to get to Buckingham Palace. Keep an eye out for the flag: the Royal Standard flies when the Queen is in residence. And make sure you head to the official souvenir shop on Buckingham Palace Road!

The Changing of the Guard can be watched for free and it takes place – weather permitting – at 11am every day in the Summer months. Get there early for a decent spot at the front of the crowds. You’ll see pristine military precessions moving from Wellington Barracks and along the Mall towards Horse Guards Parade. In the Winter it can only be seen on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, with an additional Saturday added in the Spring.
